Fuck Hawthorne Heights and Fuck Victory Records

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

seriously - this is the lamest shit I have seen in a long time

http://www.punknews.org/article.php?sid=15993

You buying our album tomorrow has much greater meaning than simply supporting Hawthorne Heights. ROCK music needs your support. Our society and culture has put rock music on the backburner. If our album can debut at #1 all of us will have taken ROCK music back to the top of the charts where it belongs. You might ask, how has ROCK been put on the backburner? A current example is an artist that we are up against called Ne-Yo. Many people are saying that Ne-Yo is going to outsell us because Ne-Yo has had a tremendous amount of over the top, mainstream media coverage. His album will be in stores tomorrow. Radio has played his single 160,000 times. Our single has been played 3,800 times. We know that does not seem possible but it is the truth. Ne-Yo is on a major label. Hawthorne Heights is on an independent label.

ROCK music needs to win tomorrow. Independent needs to beat Major tomorrow.

emusic.com

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

I signed up for emusic.com today. After resisting temptation to buy some records from the iTunes store I decided to at least check out emusic and see what the fuss is all about. This is the best site for independent music. No, you wont find top 40 garbage here what you will find it all the stuff you have to go to the independent record store to buy. So far I havent been too dissapointed. I dont expect them to have every label I am looking for but so far so good. The only thing that I havent found so far is music from no idea records. I am not a huge fat wreck fan but it would be nice to see some of their stuff up there. If you use this link you will get 50 free downloads instead of the 25 they are advertising on tv. You wont be charged until your first 2 weeks are up, then its 9.99/month for 40 songs or 19.99/month for 90 songs. Pretty sweet deal. Cancelling is a matter of pressing cancel. Its worth checking out, I promise. If you like any sort of non mainstream music you will be happy.

+ can download tracks an unlimited number of times

+ no drm

+ all in regular .mp3 format

+ put on unlimited computers, ipods, and burn unlimited amount of times

+ browse by record label (my fav)

+ tons of independent music

+ 50 free tracks with no commitment means nothing to lose

Best Buy 7.99 Drama

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

If you have been reading any music blogs recently you will notice everyone is all up in arms over the 7.99 indie type artists at Best Buy. Saki Store has summed things up and posted a ton of links if you dont know whats going on. My stance is basically this. Dont buy music at Best Buy or any other retail giant. Buy your music at independent shops. It means a lot. Pay the extra 4 bucks and know where your money is going and who you are supporting. I do however shop at Best Buy, this being said - I am a hypocrite. I buy dvds. video games and cd-rs/dvd-rs. I dont music there. I buy a good percentage of my music direct from the labels/distributors or at The Record Exchange. Recently I have been getting in to the iTunes store and paying for downloads and have been looking in to joining the emusic.com store.

So why do I buy from the local record store vs a best buy?

1- They have vinyl. I like vinyl. I cant get it anywhere else locally.
2- I like music. They like music. They dont treat me like a criminal for taking my time to browse everything. I can never make up my mind on what I want to buy. I want to browse all the used stuff and see what is new in that area since I was in last time. I want to flip through every record and go through specific racks of cds. I tend to come back to these racks a couple times simply because I cant make up my mind. At Best Buy I generally get followed around the store and asked if I need help many many times. I guess I look suspicious. When I worked retail this is what they taught us to do. 1 person would ask then stick around that aisle a little bit then another person would ask 5 mins later. You can tell you are being watched because each employee does the same thing. They werent in this aisle a minute ago why do they need to make sure they come down it now and start straightening up? When I do need help at best buy, say to get something out of a locked case, I cant find help. I am a 24 year old male, in there eyes I am not there to buy high end items like a camera, iPod, memory, etc. Its very frustrating.

3- bonuseseseses. With my record exchange card each purchase goes towards getting me a bonus. Every 100 (or is it 110) dollars I spend I get a 10 dollar bonus. I buy a lot of music so getting a bonus just for shopping there is awesome. They used to charge you 5 bucks for this little card, they dont anymore - now its free. Its a good deal. I wont however sign up for best buy rewards zone for a few reasons. I am asked if i have a card each time I am there but no one has ever offered to tell me how to get one, tell me what it does or why I would want it. If they did I still wouldnt take it. I dont trust large corporations like that with my info. I dont know what they are going to do with it and who they are going to sell it to. Even if they say they arent going to sell it I still wont sign up, this includes grocery stores.

4- the little things. I dont walk in to the record store and get bombarded by some 15 year old kid playing with the stereos and turning them up as loud as he can trying to make the store shake. Record stores generally have all sorts of little pop culture type things from toys, postcards, books and silly stuff. If you are ever looking for a gift for that hard to buy for person you will find it there.

There are plenty more reasons I just dont feel like rattling off right now but the most important one is the Best Buys of the world dont care about black people. I mean they dont care about music. Their goal is sell as many units as possible and make as much $$ as possible. Its understandable and thats why they only carry more mainstream type stuff. They dont cater to the individual listener and their employees arent as passionate about music as you are. Clerks at indie stores will give you recommendations if you ask and will bs with you about albums forever. Try that at best buy. You are buying a supporting a culture when you purchase your music at indie stores. Do whatever you want if the 4 bucks if that important to you, go to best buy. I am done.

Interview - Dan Yemin Lifetime/Kid Dynamite/Paint it Black -punknews.org/pastepunk

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

This has been in a few feeds this week so why not draw more attention to it. punknews.org & pastepunk did an Interview with Dan Yemin of Lifetime/Kid Dynamite/Paint it Black recently and its worth checking out.

Fav parts include:

Dan: … Everyone just smiling, jumping on each other, and running around in circles. Not like karate kicking…” I mean, it was just when the karate style of dancing had been invented, and we were like, “This is fucking bullshit.”

Pastepunk/Punknews.org: What do you think of all the really bad bands that say, ‘My biggest influence is Lifetime,’ but they don’t sound anything like you guys?

I think a lot of people were influenced by what Ari was doing lyrically, and that’s cool. I mean, we talked about this in an interview last night, when people say they are really influenced by Lifetime, were not quite sure what they were listening too. Lifetime was a fast as shit punk band. If I had to describe what we were doing it would be what happened if Billie Joe from GREEN DAY was singing for the GORILLA BISCUITS. Or what would happen if somebody in a hardcore band just listened to Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, and Bruce Springsteen as their vocal and lyrical influence. That’s what Lifetime was doing and I don’t know what “emo” is. “Emo” was RITES OF SPRING and EMBRACE, and everything after that is… I don’t know what it is. But it’s not eyeliner and it isn’t faux-melodrama, and it’s not like, ‘I want to be buried in your back yard.’

Just go read it.

This is Chris from the Lawrence Arms. There are three songs up right now all for download. They are pretty good. As with all band/artist myspace sites listening to/downloading tracks can be a pain in the ass at times but this one is well worth it. Cant wait for a full length or an EP.
